What Should I Expect at a Zumba® Class?
ZUMBA® fitness classes are made up of high and low intensitiy work. This is shown to be one of the most effective ways to exercise to increase cardiovascular strength, and promote weight loss. The cardio routines are set to Latin music, including salsa, cumbia, reggaeton, and merengue rhythms. You'll be having such a great time with all that shakin' and shimmyin', you may forget that you are actually experiencing a serious cardio exercise class!
That sounds great, but I can't dance!
Remember, although many say ZUMBA® classes feel like dance parties, the Zumba program is focused on fitness. The presentation and the music makes it fun, but you will get a serious workout! The cardio routhines include basic Latin dance steps. They repeat, in different variations, throughout several songs, so although it may take you more than one class to get all the steps, once you do, learning new songs will be easier. Before you know it, you'll be moving along with the music, adding your own style, and having a blast! I understand it can be intimidating to try something new. Please know that as your instructor, I feel it's my job to make you feel comfortable and present the routines in a way that helps you have fun, and get a great workout-no stress! I will visually cue you on when and how to move. And, I monitor the class, and adapt steps when necessary to increase involvement. Please also know that at any given class, there will be people of all fitness levels, and all levels of experience with ZUMBA® fitness! Everyone was a first-timer once. We all remember that feeling, and want to help you to love this form of exercise as much as we do. So...no worries!
OK...but it's been a while since I've done any exercise.
First, I've gotta say I'm thrilled that you're thinking of using the ZUMBA® program to get you moving again! You will be able to follow along at your own pace. Each move can be adjusted to your own level of fitness. I may be hopping, and you will be marching. That's fine! You'll still get all the healthy the benefits of class, and you'll be able to customize your workout to how you're feeling that particular day!
What kinds of benefits will I see? How much weight can I lose?
You will burn calories in every class-an estimated 400-1000 calories! ZUMBA® fitness has thousands of big success stories, with people losing anywhere from 10, to more than 100 pounds! How many calories you burn and how much weight you lose depends on a number of things, including how often you come to class, how much intensity you put into the workout, how much weight you have to lose, your current fitness level, and how well you're taking care of yourself outside of class. As you're losing weight, you will also be making your heart and lungs stronger, toning your whole body, and helping your brain, too! More and more research supports the idea that exercise is excellent stress relief. So...Ditch the workout, JOIN THE PARTY! TM
What Should I Wear? (And Other Stuff to Know About ZUMBA® Class)
Whether it's your first time, or if you're a regular, here are some good things to know, and keep in mind before heading to ZUMBA® class:
DRINK WATER-before, during, and after class. Staying hydrated will help your energy levels, and help your body to burn calories most effectively.
MONITOR YOURSELF-During class, pay attention to how you're feeling, and how your body is reacting to the workout. Watch your form. Keeping good posture, and pulling in the abs helps to reduce the risk of injury. Slow down if you feel tired---even just walk or march in place as needed. Get a drink if you start to feel overheated. By going at your own pace, you'll be able to keep on going!
DRESS TO MOVE...AND SWEAT!-Even when it's cold outside, you'll warm up fast! Wear comfortable pants or shorts and tops that breathe and allow you to move. Make sure to wear a good, supportive shoe, and it's best to have one without a lot of tread on the bottom. We will do motions that require twisting, and turning, and it's best to have shoes that work with you! And, wear supportive undergarments, too. We'll be doing a lot of shakin' and shimmyin'!
FOR YOUR BAG-Bring water, a towel (you will sweat!) and in cooler weather, a jacket or sweatshirt to keep the muscles warm after the workout.
